Can I come to you river?

Can I come to you river?

The second ACT of Social Aspects 2021 will be a collaboration between Melanie Maria and Nora Aurrekoetxea. Water will be used as refreshment, as a mirror, as a screen and as the connective element in a cleansing ritual. Both Arnhem and Nijmegen are cities that grow along the banks of a river. A dense web of water pipes follows the growth of a society. Water is shared and passes through our bodies without ever becoming ones property. It connects us to a cycle that has been going since the inception of our planet. In this sense, water is an unlimited public space. It reflects and supports us. Nora and Melanie will make use of this fluid, timeless entity as a platform for a sculptural and performative installation. Through it, they explore human relations and social structures

On the banks of the Waal/Rijn passersby and invitees will be asked to participate in a private performance that will in part take place on Zoom. The participants and performers are the sole public and will be the only people to experience this act. A performance like this only exists in a moment, not through shared documentation. Melanie and Nora have chosen this intimate temporality as they are both interested in real human contact in a time where mediated, shared experiences have been accepted as a surrogate. Their respective artistic practices are based on intersubjectivity, the vulnerability and strengths of ego and sexuality. They connect these ideas to context sensitive language and site specific acts. Melanie does so in the role of a choreographer while Nora acts as a mediator between objects and humans. Together, they will create a freely accessible choreography of water, individuals and objects. An interpretation of the myth of Narcissus, using the surface of the water as a screen you can drown in.

The generally sculptural practice of Nora springs forth from an interest in language, touch and sexuality. For Social Aspects, she will take a step outside the known confines of her practice to explore performance as a medium in public space. In a sense, Melanie has decided to follow a mirrored path. The base of her practice lies in performances concerning social structures. Now, she is developing sculptural works that relate to water as a source of contact, cleansing and refreshment.

During the development of this ACT they realized that there was a wealth of overlap between their respective thoughts and acts. This allowed them to create an equipollent coproduction in which the conceptual focuses of both their practices – Touch and the Other – come together in harmony.
