Laura Malpique: Rocks of culture

Laura Malpique onderzoekt het idee van domesticatie in het geval van mensen, materialen en landschappen. Haar installaties, ook landschappen, resulteren uit onderzoek naar de toestand van de grond, de materialen ervan in relatie tot de mens, reflecterend op de identiteit van de moderne mens. Het menselijke gevoel om het idee van wilde grond te scheiden van de door de mens gemaakte grond, speelt een grote rol bij onze manier om erop te leven. De door de mens gemaakte grond heeft de neiging om mensen te temmen. Het bepaalt hoe we bewegen, wat we doen, hoe we het doen. Het groeit mee met onze cultuur.

De wilde grond wordt verkocht als vrijheid, het is meestal de vakantiebestemming, de computerschermbeveiliging en tv-entertainment. In alle gevallen is het een vorm van ontsnappen aan onze directe omgeving om te ontspannen. Bakstenen, asfalt, beton, glas en metalen zijn materialen die zijn meegegroeid met onze cultuur en er vorm aan hebben gegeven. Ze zijn een symbool van onze levensstijl.

In Nijmegen toont Laura een landschap van kunstmatige rotsen - Rocks made of culture. Ze worden gebouwd van materialen die horen bij de stad Nijmegen, bij de levensstijl van de burger. Het landschap zal worden geïntegreerd in het park van Nijmegen, een ruimte om te ontsnappen aan de stad. Het geïntegreerde landschap zal pogen een gemeenschap te vormen tussen de door de mens gemaakte materiële cultuur en het wild.

Op 6 augustus organiseerde Laura Malpique met Mario Sergio Alvarez en Tommy Smits ACT 2: Fiesta camping costa Brabo. Het was een feestelijke samenkomst in de tuin van het historische Fort Beneden Lent. Een viering van cultuurmanifestaties en culturele verwarring – gemeenschappelijk koken, theater en cabaret.

Laura Malpique explores the idea of domestication in the case of humans, materials and landscapes. Her installations, which are also landscapes, are a study of the state of the ground, its materials in relation to people, reflecting on the identity of the modern human. The human sense of separating the idea of wild ground from the manmade one plays a big role on our ways to live in it. The manmade ground tends to domesticate people. It dictates how we move, what we do, how we do it. It grows with our culture.

The wild ground is sold as freedom, it tends to be the holiday destination, the computer screensaver, and TV entertainment. In all cases, it is a form of escaping our immediate surroundings to relax. Bricks, asphalt, concrete, glass and metals are materials that grew with and shaped our culture. They are a symbol of our lifestyle.

In Nijmegen, Laura will be showing a landscape of man-made rocks - Rocks made of culture. The rocks being built from materials which are a part of the city of Nijmegen, a part of the citizen’s lifestyle. The landscape will be integrated in the park of Nijmegen, which is a space to escape the city. The integrated landscape will attempt to form a communion between the manmade material culture and the wild.

On August 6, Laura Malpique organized with Tommy Smits and Mario Sergio Alvarez ACT 2: Fiesta camping costa Brabo. It was a festive gathering in the garden of historic Fort Beneden Lent. A celebration of cultural manifestations and confusion – communal cooking, theater and cabaret.
