Timeless and temporary, transient and concrete, fleeting and sustainable are opposites that meet each other in Tommy Smits' work. Out of a fascination for fossils and photography he has developed a technique with which he can immortalize photos in concrete, so that the perishable no longer perishes. In his projects, he engages in merging photos with nature, or presents them in a large, robust frame. His projects move in between photography and sculpture.

During Social Aspects, Tommy studies the pre-Roman era, drawing a contrast between a period when everything remained undocumented and the present, where there is an obsession with documentation. The existing archaeological finds bring with them stories based on interpretations and speculations, creating a shared past. In the city with a rich Roman past, Tommy gets to work with historical building constructions with a mythical background and tries to translate the stories to the 21st century by fossilizing a photo and installing it underground. Tommy's research positions itself in the present, with strong connections to the past and the future.

On August 6, Tommy Smits organized with Laura Malpique and Mario Sergio Alvarez ACT 2: Fiesta camping costa Brabo. It was a festive gathering in the garden of historic Fort Beneden Lent. A celebration of cultural manifestations and confusion – communal cooking, theater and cabaret.
